Origin and history

The Halles de Château-Gontier, located in the town of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne in the Pays de la Loire region, is a historical monument built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This neo-classical building, built between 1892 and 1893, replaces the old 15th century medieval halls. Its architecture is distinguished by a rhythmic tufted facade of 36 arcades, once home to shops on the ground floor, and a vast glass window resting on a metal frame, typical of the industrial buildings of the period.

The building is part of a modern urban context, where the halls play a central role in economic and social life. They serve as a place of commerce, meeting and exchange for the inhabitants, reflecting the importance of covered markets in French cities at the end of the 19th century. The structure, partially protected since 1997 (roof and facades), also illustrates the adaptation of modern architectural techniques — such as metal use — to the functional needs of a growing municipality.

Today, the Halles de Château-Gontier remains a symbol of the industrial and commercial heritage of Mayenne. Their location, between Place de la République and Place Paul-Doumer, makes it a landmark in the city centre. Although their current use (visits, rentals, etc.) is not specified in the sources, their preservation bears witness to their historical and architectural value to the local community.
