Halles: registration by order of 23 October 1941

Origin and history

The halls of Couhé, located in the town of Valence-en-Poitou (formerly Couhé, code Insee 86082), date from the 16th century. This historic monument is distinguished by its architecture consisting of three naves and thirteen spans, supported by two rows of octagonal stone pillars. These halls, typical of the civil buildings of the time, served as a central place for trade and community gatherings.

Classified as a Historical Monument, the halls of Couhé were officially registered by decree of 23 October 1941. Their location, although documented (5 Rue du Commerce, 86700 Couhé), has a geographical accuracy considered poor according to the criteria of the Merimée base. This type of hall reflects the importance of covered markets in the economic and social organization of the towns of the Poitou-Charentes region (now New Aquitaine) during the Renaissance.

The Couhé halls illustrate the utilitarian architecture of the period, designed to house commercial activities while structuring the urban space. Their preservation reflects the heritage interest of medieval and reborn civilian buildings, often less prominent than religious or military monuments. No information is available about their current use (visit, rental, accommodation) or possible characters related to their construction or history.
