Origin and history

The halls of Cozes, located in the department of Charente-Maritime in New Aquitaine, are a covered market whose origin dates back to the 15th century. Their initial construction was modified in the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting the architectural changes and commercial needs of the period. These successive changes have made it possible to adapt the building to local market practices, while maintaining its historical character.

The hall square was already a market place in the early Middle Ages, stressing its economic importance for the municipality. In the 19th century, the building became public property after its acquisition by the commune to the notables and merchants who owned it. This acquisition marked a transition to collective management, strengthening its central role in Cozes' social and commercial life.

Ranked historic monument by decree of 15 September 1938, the halls of Cozes today bear witness to centuries of commercial and architectural history. Their inclusion in the inventory of historic monuments attests to their heritage value, while allowing them to be preserved for future generations. Their precise location at 5352 Place des Halles makes it an essential landmark in the centre of the commune.
