Origin and history

The Lagery Halls are an emblematic building located in the heart of the village of Lagery, in the department of the Marne, in the Grand Est region. Built around 1543 according to cross-referenced testimonies, they housed important fairs, such as those of Saint-Mathieu (21 September) and Tuesday following Pentecost, as well as a weekly market every Tuesday. These commercial events, active until the 17th century, demonstrate the central role of the halls in the economic and social life of the community.

Ranked as a Historic Monument on January 30, 1922, the halls were restored at the beginning of the 21st century, including the adjacent washhouse. Their architecture and function reflect the traditional organisation of rural exchanges in Champagne. Today, they remain a protected communal heritage, associated with the memory of the fairs and markets that animated Lagery for centuries.

Available sources, including Memoirs of the Marne Agriculture, Science and Arts Society (1986), highlight their historical importance. Their precise location, 4 Place des Halles, and their status as communal property make it a place anchored in the local landscape. The Merimée database and the departmental archives complete the data on this monument representative of the medieval and modern halls of the region.
