Origin and history
The halls of Nant are an emblematic civil building located in the commune of Nant, in the department of Aveyron, in the Occitanie region. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, they consist of five arched spans, supporting a lauze roof. Their structure, reinforced by foothills, served both as a market place and a public space for the inhabitants. These halls reflect the local architectural techniques of the modern era, adapted to the commercial and social needs of a rural community.
Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 13 April 1944, the halls of Nant testify to the importance of collective spaces in Occitan villages. Their official inscription underlines their heritage value, both for their architectural design and for their historical role in the economic and social life of Nant. The lauze cover, typical of the region, and the arch arch structure make it a remarkable example of Aveyronian vernacular architecture.
The halls today belong to the town of Nant and remain a symbol of local heritage. Their central location on Place du Claux makes it a landmark in the village. Although the sources do not specify their current use (visits, rentals, etc.), their preservation allows to perpetuate the memory of commercial and community practices of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Rouergue.
