Origin and history
The Varaville stud is a contemporary building built in 1966 by American architect Peter Harnden. It is erected on the site of the former castle of Varaville, in the department of Calvados. This monument is distinguished by its style inspired by Californian villas, with a wide and overflowing roof, and a harmonious integration into its environment. It consists of three architectural subsets, designed to adapt to the landscape.
The haras is surrounded by a contemporary garden, the work of landscaper Russell Page. This garden includes a massif of perennials, two bedrooms of greenery and a large central lawn, creating a vegetal setting around the house. Together, including the access aisles, has been listed as a historic monument since March 27, 2012, highlighting its heritage importance.
The site, now owned by a private company, illustrates a modern architecture integrated with a preserved natural setting. Its history is marked by the transformation of a historic site (the former castle) into a contemporary building, reflecting the architectural and landscape developments of the twentieth century.
