Origin and history
The house at 21 Rue Juiverie, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, is an example of civil architecture from the late 16th century. Built during the 4th quarter of the 16th century, it illustrates the Renaissance style that developed in the Lyon region, marked by economic and cultural prosperity. Its facades and roofs, as well as its staircase on courtyard adorned with balustrades, were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 22 February 1978.
The building is representative of the bourgeois houses of the time, where the stone art and carved decorations reflected the social status of their owners. The Rue Juiverie, located in Old Lyon, was a dynamic neighbourhood, combining artisanal, commercial and residential activities. This type of house, with its neat architectural elements, bears witness to the importance attached to aesthetics and comfort in the urban habitats of the Lyon Renaissance.
The legal protections applied in 1978 aim to preserve the main architectural features of the house, including its staircase, a central element of the interior distribution and often carefully decorated in the houses of this period. The approximate location indicated by GPS coordinates (19 rue Juiverie) suggests a possible confusion or an evolution of the urban route, but the official address recorded in the Mérimée base remains 21 rue Juiverie, in the 1st administrative district of Lyon (code Insee 69123).
