Origin and history
The house at 39 rue du Pont in Niort is a historical monument built in the 15th century. This building, typical of medieval civil architecture, is distinguished by its facade and roof, protected by a decree of inscription in 1930. Its location in the city centre of Niort, then dynamic city of Poitou, reflects the importance of bourgeois or commercial dwellings of that time.
In the 15th century, Niort was a prosperous city, thanks to its commercial and artisanal role in the Poitou region. Houses of this period, such as those on Rue du Pont, often served as housing for merchants, local notables or artisans. Their architecture, combining residential and sometimes professional functions, bears witness to the economic and social vitality of the city at the end of the Middle Ages.
These buildings helped to structure the urban fabric, while embodying the status of their owners.
