Origin and history

The house located at 60 rue de la Châtelaine in Laon presents a hybrid architecture, typical of the urban transformations between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Its front façade, made of wood, contrasts with the stone and brick back, reflecting progressive constructive techniques. The cellars, marked by arches and a 13th century staircase, bear witness to an ancient occupation, while the street façade, dating back to the second half of the 15th century, was covered with later modern veneer.

The courtyard façade and the structure, characteristic of the seventeenth century, illustrate a major renovation phase, probably linked to the adaptation to the new standards of comfort. The staircase, attributed to the 18th century, suggests a modernization of internal traffic. These successive strata make this building an architectural palimpsest, where each century has left its mark, from medieval foundations to lighting.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 22 July 1927, the house is protected for its facade on street, highlighting its heritage interest. The accuracy of its location is considered poor (level 5/10), and its official address in the Merimée base confirms its anchoring in the historic center of Laon, in the department of Aisne. No information is available on its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
