Façade sur rue : inscription by order of 15 July 1927

Origin and history

The house located at 47 Rue Sérurier in Laon is a historical monument whose anterior elevation, in limestone and medium apparatus, dates back to the 15th century. The street façade, characteristic of this period, was restored in the last quarter of the twentieth century, with a reconstruction of the ground floor windows. The cellars, partially preserved, have arches and crows that could date back to the 13th century, reflecting an earlier occupation of the site.

The posterior facade, coated and modified several times over the centuries, contrasts with the medieval appearance of the main façade. The staircase and interior fittings, however, were not before the 19th century, reflecting subsequent adaptations to residential needs. The protection of the facade on street by a decree of 15 July 1927 underlines its heritage interest, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10).

This building illustrates the architectural evolution of an urban house between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The materials used, such as limestone for the large work and the rubble for the rest, as well as the successive transformations, reveal the construction techniques and the varied uses of space over time.
