Origin and history

The house at 14 and 16 rue François-Péron in Moulins (Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) is a civil building dating from the second half of the 15th century. It is distinguished by its three interior facades decorated with a typical decoration of the flamboyant style, characteristic of the late Middle Ages. The windows, framed by complex mouldings, have triangular pilasters interrupted by larmies and ground arches, while their lintels are surmounted by panels carved in bas-relief. A facade also exhibits two shields in four lobe, each surrounded by threaded arches, possible testimonies of a noble or bourgeois origin.

The upper part of the floor houses a wood-paned gallery, supported by a moulded sandstone, thus combining stone and wood in a typical structure of medieval urban architecture. These decorative elements, combined with the quality of the sculptures, suggest a construction intended for an affluent family, possibly linked to trade or local government. The house was partially listed as historic monuments on 24 September 1975, specifically protecting its facades and roofs on the courtyard, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The building illustrates the dynamism of Moulins at the end of the 15th century, when the city, capital of the Dukes of Bourbon, experienced economic and cultural growth. The flamboyant houses, like this one, reflect the influence of bourbonese workshops and the diffusion of late Gothic motifs in civil architecture. Today, it remains a preserved example of this heritage, accessible via the Merimée base and located near the historical centre of Moulins.
