Origin and history

The house at 33 rue d'Aube in Bar-sur-Aube is a civil building dating from the last quarter of the 16th century, a period marked by the transition between Renaissance and classicism in architecture. Its inscription as Monument Historique in 1963 specifically protects its facade, including two small side cabinets and the corresponding roof slope, characteristic elements of bourgeois houses of the period in Champagne.

Bar-sur-Aube, then integrated into the province of Champagne, experienced in the 16th century an economic boom linked to the trade in wine and linen. The houses of this period reflect the prosperity of local merchants and notables, with facades decorated with carved motifs and dressing rooms serving both decorative elements and surveillance spaces. The civil architecture of this period also reflects the influence of Italian models, disseminated by local artisans and trade.

The 1963 inscription, limited to external elements, highlights the heritage value of this facade as a preserved example of the rural urban habitat of the late Renaissance. The lack of internal protection suggests further transformations, which are common for this type of building. The location on the rue d'Aube, the main street of the city, reinforces its historical and urban interest.
