Origin and history

The house at 45 rue de la République in Guebwiller, Haut-Rhin department, has been a historic monument since 1932. This building, whose origins date back to the early seventeenth century, features architectural elements dated 1611 and 1683. In particular, the façade retains a statue of the Virgin with its console, probably added during the reshuffles of 1683.

The house has undergone significant transformations, as evidenced by a lintel today deposited at 11 rue du old Armand. This lintel, along with the engraved dates, suggest an initial construction in 1611, followed by a major modification in 1683. The inscription for historical monuments in 1932 specifically concerns the statue of the Virgin and her console, sculpted elements emblematic of the facade.

Guebwiller, an Alsatian city marked by a rich medieval and modern history, included half-timbered or stone houses, reflecting local prosperity. This type of building, often redesigned over the centuries, illustrates the architectural and social evolution of the region, between Germanic and French influences. The bourgeois houses, like this one, served both as a place of life, trade and representation for their owners.
