Louis XVI door and balcony: inscription by decree of 3 November 1927

Origin and history

The Bricqueville hotel is an iconic monument located in the heart of Bayeux, Calvados. Built in the 18th century, it embodies the refined civil architecture of this period, with characteristic decorative elements such as its Louis XVI style door and balcony. The latter, recognized for their heritage value, were registered as historical monuments by order of 3 November 1927.

The building is located at 76 rue des Bouchers in downtown Bayeux, a location that reflects its historic and urban importance. Although the sources do not detail its original use, its architecture and protection suggest a past linked to the aristocracy or the local bourgeoisie, typical of the mansions of the time.

In the 18th century Bayeux, like other Norman cities, was marked by a mixed economy, combining agriculture, commerce and crafts. Private hotels, such as Bricqueville, often served as residences for wealthy families or notables, playing a role in the social and political life of the city. Their preservation today bears witness to this architectural and cultural heritage.
