Facade and roof: inscription by decree of 25 June 1929
Origin and history
The house of 10 rue Bicoquet is a building located in the town of Caen, in the Calvados department, Normandy. Dating from the seventeenth century, it is a typical example of the civil architecture of this period in the region. The building has been listed as a Historic Monument since June 25, 1929, reflecting its heritage significance. Its location, less than 200 meters north of the Abbey aux Hommes, highlights its integration into a major historical district of Caen.
In the 17th century, Caen was a dynamic city, marked by its administrative, religious and commercial role in Lower Normandy. The houses of that time often reflected the prosperity of the owners, usually bourgeois, merchants or artisans. These buildings served both as housing and sometimes as a place of work, thus participating in the economic and social life of the city. The inscription of this house as a historical monument makes it possible today to preserve a material testimony of this pivotal period.
The protected elements of the house include its facade and roof, according to the 1929 registration order. These architectural features, although not detailed in the sources, are representative of construction techniques and decorative styles in vogue in the seventeenth century in Normandy. The proximity to the Abbey to Men, founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, also reinforces the historical interest of the area, where centuries of heritage are mixed.
