House of the Virgin and remains of the Gate of Abas: classification by decree of 27 June 1945

Origin and history

The House of the Virgin is an emblematic building of Châteaudun, sub-prefecture of the department of Eure-et-Loir, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built in the 16th century, it is located inside the barbacanne protecting the access to the door of Abas, a vestige of the medieval fortifications of the city. Its wood-pan architecture, characteristic of the Renaissance, is marked by a protruding floor on the ground floor, supported by ground floor. A statuette from the Virgin to the Child, placed on the first floor, gives its name to the monument and bears witness to its anchoring in the local religious and civil heritage.

The house was classified as historic monuments by order of 27 June 1945, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This classification also includes the remains of the door of Abas, highlighting the link between this building and Châteaudun's defensive history. The bays of the house have retained their old carpentry, offering a rare example of 16th century craftsmanship. Today, the House of the Virgin belongs to the commune and remains a major architectural testimony of this period, although its access to the public (visits, rental) is not specified in the available sources.

Located on 2 rue de la Porte d'Abas, the house is located in a historic area where medieval and Renaissance heritage are mixed. Its location, near the former fortifications, recalls the strategic importance of Châteaudun in the times when the city was a commercial and military crossroads. The statuette of the Virgin, a prominent feature of its facade, also evokes the Marian devotion that is common in the French cities of that time, often associated with the protection of homes and urban entrances.
