Origin and history

The House of the Baili of Marcoing is an emblematic building located at 2 rue Fénelon (or Place Fénelon according to the sources) in Cambrai, in the Northern Department. This monument is distinguished by its hexagonal turret, the only remaining element of a 16th century residence. Its architecture reflects the stylistic influences of the Renaissance, a period marked by artistic and cultural renewal in Europe.

The façade of the house, including its turret, was listed as historical monuments on November 20, 1931. This heritage protection underscores its historical and architectural importance. Although information about its original use or occupants is scarce, this type of residence was generally associated with influential local personalities, such as baililis or urban notables.

In modern times Cambrai was a dynamic city, integrated into the commercial and political network of Flanders. The houses of this period often served as places of power or representation for local elites. The partial preservation of this monument offers an overview of the urban life and home architecture of this period in the region.
