Origin and history
The house located in the Beurre in Quimper is a 17th century building, typical of Breton civil architecture of this time. It is distinguished by its facade and roof slope, protected by a registration order in 1956, reflecting the heritage importance of the building in the historic centre of the city.
In the 18th century, this residence was inhabited by the canon of Boisbilly, born in Morlaix in 1736 and died in Quimper in 1786. An influential member of the Chapter of Quimper, he was noted in 1767 as a Member of Parliament for the States of Brittany held in Nantes. His critical spirit prompted him to compose a satirical song against the Duke of Aiguillon, governor of the province, which earned him a six-month prison term in the Bastille.
A man of letters appreciated in the provincial salons, de Boisbilly cultivated a reputation as a poet, although his works remain little known today. His political commitment and his entanglements with the royal power illustrated the social tensions of the Ancien Régime Brittany, where local elites, like canons, played a key role in intellectual and administrative life.
The building, still visible in 13 Place au Beurre, retains a central location in Quimper, a city marked by its medieval and religious heritage. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments highlights its value as a witness to urban history and the figures that animated it.
