Façade sur rue et Roof : classification by order of 18 October 1938
Origin and history
The house at 12 Kéréon Street in Quimper is an emblematic monument of 16th century Breton civil architecture. It is distinguished by its street façade, composed of three floors of wood panels in successive corbellations. These elements are based on a series of ground beams forming consoles, illustrating the expertise of the carpenters of the time. The roof and facade were protected by a classification as Historic Monuments in 1938, highlighting their outstanding heritage value.
The building embodies late medieval constructive techniques, still in use in the 16th century in Breton cities. The corbellations, typical of the urban houses of this period, allowed to enlarge the living space by overlooking the street. Quimper, then an important economic and religious centre, saw the development of this type of architecture, combining residential and sometimes commercial functions. The conservation of this house offers a tangible testimony of urban life in Brittany during the Renaissance.
The location of the house, in the historic heart of Quimper, reinforces its heritage interest. The exact address, 12 rue Kéréon, corresponds to the data of the Merimée database, confirming its anchoring in the medieval urban fabric. Although information on its original use or its occupants was missing from the sources, its classification in 1938 demonstrated its importance for the preservation of Breton architectural heritage. The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair, suggesting clear identification despite approximate GPS coordinates.
