Origin and history

Vitré House is a listed historical monument, representative of 15th century civil architecture. Built in wooden strips, it bears witness to medieval construction techniques still visible in the city centre of Vitré, Ille-et-Vilaine. Its architectural style, marked by half-timbered facades, reflects the local traditions of the time, where wood was a material widely used for urban dwellings.

Classified as a Historic Monument by order of 22 March 1965, this house saw its facades on the street and its roofs protected for their heritage value. The precise location, 7 Rue de Paris, places this building in a historic area of Vitré, a city known for its rich medieval heritage. Although the sources do not specify its original use, this type of house was generally intended for artisans, merchants or wealthy families of the Breton urban bourgeoisie of the 15th century.
