Origin and history

This house, located in Salins-les-Bains in the Jura department (39), is an emblematic monument of the 15th and 17th centuries. It is distinguished by its facades and two screw staircases dating from the 15th century, with the exception of a 19th century span. All the facades on courtyard and garden, as well as the roofs, testify to the architecture of the seventeenth century, with a south wall of the main courtyard particularly remarkable.

These elements led to its registration as a Historical Monument by order of 7 July 1989. Salins-les-Bains, a spa and historical town of Franche-Comté, was a place of intense exchange and social life in the 15th and 17th centuries. The houses of that time often reflected the social status of their owners, with neat architectural elements such as screw stairs, symbols of prestige.

These buildings served both as a dwelling, a place of commerce or craft, and sometimes as a welcome for travellers or curists attracted by the saline sources of the region. Their preservation now allows us to understand the urban and architectural evolution of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
