Portal including vantals (Case AD 238): registration by order of 4 August 1978

Origin and history

This stone house, located in Crépy-en-Valois, dates from the 16th century and is distinguished by its two-storey facade. It opens on the street by a door carved in the middle of a hanger, surmounted by an entably supported by doric columns and pilasters. A small open window adorns the upper floor, while a blindfold separates the levels. Access to the floors is via a screw staircase housed in a polygonal tower, located in the courtyard. The attic, particularly imposing, is illuminated by an opening on the south gable and covered by a roof on a steep slope.

Originally, this house would have housed the first salt attic of Crepy-en-Valois, as suggested by its exceptional height of 12 meters, rare in the old town. A sculpture above the entrance door confirms its construction in the 16th century. The building was successively named "Hotel de la Gabelle" (linked to salt tax), then "Hotel de la Poste" in the 19th century. Its portal, including vantals, has been protected since a registration order in 1978.

The architecture reflects a function both residential and administrative, typical of gabelle-related buildings under the Old Regime. The door in the middle, initially supported by conical columns (of which the capitals remain), and the open window above, underline its monumental character. "Hotel de la Gabelle" refers to its role in the collection of the salt tax, a strategic resource in modern times.

The location at 18 rue de la Cloche (code INSEE 60176, département de l-Oise) places this monument in the historical heart of Crépy-en-Valois. Although the accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), its address corresponds to the Merimée database. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, accommodation).
