Origin and history
The house-tour of Poggio is a monument located in the town of Ersa, Corsica. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century, it illustrates the defensive architecture characteristic of this period on the island. The tower houses, frequent in Corsica at that time, served both as housing and as protection against external incursions, reflecting the tensions and security needs of local populations.
At the end of the sixteenth century, Corsica was marked by frequent conflicts between local factions and external threats, including barbaric raids. In this context, tower houses like Poggio played a central role in the social and defensive organization of villages. They symbolized the power of the families who owned them and offered shelter in the event of an attack, while serving as a monitoring point for the community.
