Origin and history
The house at 23-25 rue de l'Ancienne-Comédie in Poitiers is a civil building dating from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century. This monument, although partially preserved, illustrates the Renaissance home architecture in Poitou. Its most remarkable element, a typical skylight of this period, was protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on February 18, 1927.
The location of this building, in the historic centre of Poitiers, reflects the urbanization of the city during the Renaissance, a period marked by architectural and cultural renewal. The houses of that time often served as residences for the bourgeois or wealthy craftsmen, playing a central role in the economic and social life of the city. Their preservation now allows us to study construction techniques and decorative styles in the sixteenth century.
The data available, especially from the Merimée database and Monumentum, highlight the heritage importance of this skylight, the only protected element of the building. The exact address, confirmed by GPS coordinates and communal archives, attests to its anchoring in the Poitevin urban fabric. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "a priori satisfactory", facilitating its identification by researchers and visitors.
