The window of the 15th century: inscription by decree of 8 October 1936

Origin and history

The house at 4 Arthur-de-la-Mauvinière Street (formerly Labbé-de-la-Mauvinière Street) in Poitiers is a 15th-century civilian building. This monument is representative of the medieval urban architecture of the city, although few original elements remain today. Only a window of the 15th century was officially protected by a registration order in 1936, highlighting its heritage interest despite the partial state of conservation of the building.

Poitiers, the historic town of Poitou, was in the 15th century an economic and intellectual crossroads under the influence of the Dukes of Aquitaine and the kings of France. The bourgeois houses of that time often reflected the prosperity of local merchants or notables, although their facades were frequently revised in the following centuries. This type of building, even partially preserved, offers an overview of lifestyles and construction techniques in force at the end of the Middle Ages in the western centre of France.

The inclusion of the window in 1936 reflects an early awareness of the heritage value of minor architectural elements, often neglected for the benefit of large monuments. The approximate location (noted 6/10 in precision) and the lack of details about possible owners or sponsors make it difficult to fully reconstruct the history of this house. Today, its use (visit, rental, etc.) is not documented in available sources.
