Origin and history

The houses in Sospel, in the Alpes-Maritimes, date from the 15th century and represent a medieval architectural heritage typical of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. These dwellings, although partially documented, illustrate the urban planning and construction techniques of the period, with remarkable elements such as a 15th century door lintel, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 12 January 1931.

The door lintel, the only explicitly protected element, bears witness to the importance attached to preserving medieval architectural details in this commune. Sospel, located near Nice, was at this time a place of passage and exchanges, where the houses played a central role in everyday life, sheltering artisans, merchants and inhabitants.
