Origin and history

The Houses located 2 and 4 quai Vauban in Besançon constitute a historical monument whose facades and roofs, as well as the pavement and wharf, were protected by a registration order in 1933. These buildings are closely linked to the military history of the city, notably through their association with the Citadelle and the urban enclosure of Besançon. Their location, close to the remains of the ramparts and bastioned towers, underscores their role in the defensive landscape of the city.

In 2019, a second decree extended the protection to additional elements of the urban enclosure, including remains buried in counterscarps, ramparts, and 18th century guard corps. Among these elements, the guard corps is from Chamars and the remains of the bezel of Brégille illustrate the evolution of Besançon fortifications. These successive protections demonstrate the desire to preserve a major architectural and military heritage, reflecting the defensive strategies of past centuries.

The Vauban wharf, where these houses are located, is an emblematic place of Besançon, marked by its riveric and strategic history. The accuracy of their location, although considered "passable" according to the sources, allows them to be located in a rich urban environment, between military memory and contemporary development. Their status as historical monument enshrines them in a dynamic of valuing local heritage, while offering a tangible witness to the transformations of the city over the years.
