Origin and history
The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Villiers-sur-Tholon is a religious building located in the village of the same name, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is a typical example of the religious architecture of this period in the region. Its designation as a historical monument in 1976 bears witness to its heritage importance, although the precise details of its construction and evolution remain partially documented.
Like many rural churches in Burgundy, this monument probably played a central role in the community life of Villiers-sur-Tholon. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, churches served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and religious practices of the time. Their architecture, often marked by Gothic or Renaissance influences, illustrates stylistic transitions and local know-how.
The exclusion of the modern bell tower during the 1976 protection suggests subsequent changes, common in the history of these buildings.
