Origin and history

The church of Saint-Thomas-Becket de Bénodet found its origins in the 12th century as a seigneurial chapel built by Count Eude (or Eudon) of Fouesnant. Dedicated to Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury murdered in 1170 and canonized in 1173, it consists of a nave and a small bell tower without stairs. In 1231, the count offered the monument to the bishop of Quimper, Rainaud, who gave it to the abbey of Daoulas on condition that he would provide prayers and religious service. This place then became a priory until 1690, before being attached to the seminary of Brest, and then became a parish church in 1802.

The chapel underwent major modifications in the 15th century, with an elongation of the nave and the addition of a sacristy to the south. In 1836, a storm destroyed the bell tower, resulting in repairs financed by a royal ordinance. In 1840, the sacristy, in poor condition, was restored with the help of Louis-Philippe and the Queen. Between 1873 and 1887, architect Joseph Bigot led a complete reconstruction of the nave and the lower side, retaining only the 13th century choir and some original elements such as the west gate.

The building, inscribed in historical monuments in 1928, illustrates the architectural evolution of Brittany, mixing primitive Gothic and 19th century restorations. Its three-vessel plane, flat bedside and openwork bell tower reflect these influences. The 13th century choir, with its dogive-crossed vaults and carved capitals, as well as the 15th century side chapel, bear witness to its medieval heritage. The 19th century works, led by entrepreneurs Auguste Michel and Jean-Louis Le Naour, modernized the church while preserving these historical remains.

Originally linked to the parish of Perguet, the chapel of Bénodet gained independence in the early 19th century. Its history is marked by seigneurial gifts, ecclesiastical ties and reconstructions, reflecting the religious and political dynamics of Brittany. Today, it remains a symbol of the Finnish religious and architectural heritage, open to the visit and property of the municipality.
