Origin and history
The Notre-Dame de Lorette hermitage, located in Port-Lesney in the Jura, is a historic monument composed of a chapel and a perpendicular building, complemented by a bedside apartment. The chapel, with an arcade bell tower, includes a nave and a broken crib covered choir. The choir's capitals, characteristic of the 15th century, make it possible to date this part of the monument, while the nave and the residential buildings seem to result from an expansion made at the end of the 17th century. The paintings of the lower side of the nave, made between 1947 and 1949, pay homage to the Virgin of Lorette, adding an artistic and spiritual dimension to the building.
In the 19th century, hermitage housed a school, demonstrating its versatile role in the local community. Between 1853 and 1857, the monument was substantially renovated, preserving its architectural heritage. The facades and roofs of the complex were listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by an order of May 27, 2002, recognizing their heritage value.
The location of the hermitage, although documented, remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as satisfactory. The site, marked by a rich and varied history, continues to bear witness to the architectural and social evolutions of the region, from its medieval origin to its modern uses, to its educational role in the nineteenth century.
