Tumulus (Case T 273): Order of 21 May 1957
Origin and history
The Hermitage tumulus is a megalithic monument located in Guiscriff, Morbihan, England. This funerary terre, dated from the Bronze Age, is today in a very rough form, with a maximum height of about 1 metre above the natural ground. It is located in a field, along the Rue de la Source, in a preserved rural environment.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 21 May 1957, the tumulus illustrates the importance of collective funeral practices during the Bronze Age in Brittany. Its present state, although degraded, is evidence of ancient construction techniques and of an organized human occupation around ritual sites. No recent excavations are mentioned in the available sources, but its classification underscores its heritage value.
At the Bronze Age, Brittany was marked by an agro-pastoral society where tumulus served as collective burials for local communities. These monuments, often located above or near water points, played a symbolic and social role, strengthening the links between the living and the ancestors. Hermitage's tumulus is part of this network of megalithic sites characteristic of the region, although its architectural or archaeological specificities remain poorly documented.
