Origin and history

The Maison du Blé et du Pain is a museum housed in an 18th century common house, located in the heart of the old Verdun-sur-le-Doubs. This place retraces the history of the emblematic cereal that is wheat, as well as that of bread, the fundamental food of past and present societies. The permanent exhibition uses objects, illustrations, models and films to evoke seven millennia of harvest, from ancestral techniques to modern practices.

The museum highlights the various stages of the production of bread, from ploughing to bakery, to threshing and milling. It also addresses food conservation and meal-related traditions. This project is part of a broader approach, initiated in 1930 with the creation of France's first cooperative elevators in Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, highlighting the historical importance of this region in the agri-food and grain economy.

Ranked as Musée de France, this site offers a dive into the ethnology of wheat-related trades, while illustrating local and regional history. The reenactments and audiovisual projections enrich the visit, allowing visitors to understand the evolution of agro-food techniques and the central role of bread in human societies.
