Origin and history
La Croix Pucelle, located in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in the Yvelines, is a cross of road erected during the 3rd quarter of the 15th century. This historic monument is associated with a landmark event in the history of France: the rehabilitation process of Jeanne d'Arc. According to available sources, this cross was ordered by Dunois, a companion of arms of Jeanne d'Arc, to commemorate this event.
The location of the Pucell Cross is documented in the Merimée database, with an accuracy considered fair (note of 5/10). It has been protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments since 7 August 1926. This type of monument, typical of medieval heritage, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where the Pucelle Cross is located, was at that time a town close to the royal power, located in Île-de-France. The road crosses, like this one, played an important role in daily life, marking places of prayer, crossroads or historical events. Their presence also reflected the importance of religion in the social and spatial organization of the territories.
