Origin and history
The wooden house, located at 39 rue de Paris in Houdan (Yvelines), is an example of medieval civil architecture dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century. This building, typical of the wood-pan constructions of the period, illustrates the construction techniques and craftsmanship of the late Middle Ages in Île-de-France. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by order of 4 June 1926 underlines its heritage importance and its remarkable state of conservation for this period.
At the end of the 15th century Houdan, like many cities in Île-de-France, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where half-timbered houses served both as a dwelling and a workshop for local traders or artisans. These wooden structures, often aligned along the main streets, reflected the social and urban organization of the medieval towns. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the living environment and architectural practices of the time, in a region then under the direct influence of the crown of France.
The location of the house at 39 rue de Paris corresponds to a historic address listed in the Merimée base, although the current GPS coordinates suggest an approximation to 43 of the same street. This minor discrepance, common for ancient monuments, does not alter the heritage value of the place. The house, still visible today, offers a material testimony of Houdan's urban and architectural transformations since the Middle Ages.
