House in wooden strips: inscription by order of 6 September 1933
Origin and history
The wooden house at 5 Rue des Sources in Bernay is a remarkable example of 16th century civil architecture. This type of construction, characteristic of Norman cities, uses a wooden structure filled with torchi or bricks, offering both solidity and aesthetics. The house was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 6 September 1933, thus emphasizing its heritage value and its importance for the preservation of the old building.
Bernay, located in the department of Eure in Normandy, was at that time a dynamic city, marked by commercial and craft activities. Wood-paned houses often served as houses for merchants or artisans, while sometimes sheltering shops on the ground floor. These buildings reflect the social and economic organization of the late medieval cities, where wood, an abundant material in the region, was widely used in construction.
The precise location of the house, indicated in the Merimée base, is 5 rue des Sources, although GPS coordinates suggest an approximate address at 7 of the same street. This minor discrepance does not alter its status as a protected heritage. The house, although not explicitly described as open to the public, embodies an architectural heritage visually accessible from the public highway, thus contributing to Bernay's collective memory.
