Origin and history
The wooden house, located on Rue Dombey in Mâcon (Saône-et-Loire), is one of the oldest houses in the city, built between 1490 and 1510. Its architecture combines a ground floor in masonry, pierced openings in basket handle, and three floors in wooden strips. The first floor is distinguished by a rich carved decor, mixing columns, characters, real or fantastic animals, and sometimes grivois patterns. The upper levels adopt a more sober style, with a discreet molding.
Classified as a historic monument on April 2, 1920, this house illustrates the craftsmanship and constructive techniques of the late Middle Ages in Burgundy. His exceptional state of conservation earned him the Regional Heritage Award in 2011. Today, its first two floors house a restaurant, while facades and roofs remain protected by the original classification decree.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its address in Place du Marché-aux-Herbes and 22 rue Dombey, in the historic centre of Mâcon. Its architectural style, typical of Burgundian half-timbered houses, reflects both a residential function and a desire for symbolic decoration, characteristic of the merchant towns of the period.
