René Descartes - Philosopher and mathematician Born in this house according to tradition.

Origin and history

Descartes' home, located in Descartes (formerly The Hague in Touraine) in Indre-et-Loire, is a 16th-century building. This square building, partially renovated in the 17th and 19th centuries, retains medieval architectural elements like a square staircase tower with a hooked gable. According to tradition, René Descartes was born there on 31 March 1596, although this claim is based on oral sources transmitted over the centuries.

The house was listed as historic monuments on March 25, 1949, recognizing its heritage value. Transformed into a museum in 1974, it was expanded in 2005 to present a panorama of the life and work of the philosopher, as well as the cultural context of the Renaissance and 17th century. The museum obtained the label "Maisons des Illustres" in 2012, consolidating its status as a place of memory dedicated to one of the greatest French thinkers.

Architecturally, the house was originally composed of two building bodies surrounding a central pavilion, of which only the latter remains today. The street façade was modified in the 17th century, while the back part, overlooking a garden, includes a low extension probably built in the 18th century. The property now belongs to the commune of Descartes and houses the museum Descartes, labeled "Musée de France".
