Origin and history

The bourgeois hospital of Selestat is a building of the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, built between 1765 and 1768 in a classical style. It replaces a chapel (Saint-Quirin) and a fishing corporation house, destroyed for its construction. The first stone was laid in 1765, and the chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit blessed in 1768, although the works were received only in 1770. The pediment bears the date of 1766, and the inscription "bourgeois hospital and burger spital" remains partially visible.

The architect Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Chassan, based in Colmar, designed the plans. The hospital also served as a prison in the 19th century before becoming a report house. It was listed as a historical monument in 1995 and retains protected facades and roofs. Its history reflects the urban changes of Séletat, between care, justice and heritage.

The building, located 1 square of the Old Port, embodies the 18th century Alsatian civil architecture. Its initial use as a bourgeois hospital (for wealthy citizens) and its subsequent conversion illustrate the evolution of social needs. The disappearance of the original sculpture (colombe and tau) and the trace of old usages make it a complex testimony of local history.
