Origin and history

The hospital of Villefranche-de-Conflent was founded in 1225 by Pons de Sarabeu, in a house he had built in the heart of the medieval city. The building, preserved almost without major changes, is distinguished by its quadrangular tower crowned with stone crows, remains of an old round road. These architectural elements, as well as the embrasures and arches in the middle of the façade, reflect the 13th century construction techniques, with local materials arranged in regular horizontal beds and reinforced angle chains.

The city of Villefranche-de-Conflent, founded in 1091 by the Count of Cerdagne Guillem Ramon, quickly became the capital of the Conflent and a strategic crossroads controlling access to the Pyrenean valleys. In the 13th century, during the period of construction of the hospital, the city built civil and religious infrastructures, including the church of St. James and fortifications modified over the centuries. The hospital is part of this context of urban development, responding to the needs of a growing population and to defence imperatives, as evidenced by its military remains (scenery, watchtower).

In the seventeenth century, the city was profoundly transformed by the engineers of Vauban, who strengthened their defences with Fort Liberia and modernized its ramparts. Although the hospital is not directly mentioned in this work, its medieval architecture contrasts with the classical additions of this period. Ranked at historical monuments in 1965 for its facades and roofs, the building illustrates the civil and military duality of Villefranche, between medieval heritage and adaptations to modern conflicts.

Today, Villefranche-de-Conflent Hospital, owned by the municipality, is part of an exceptional urban complex, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 for its fortified system designed by Vauban. Its remarkable state of preservation, with elements such as the ancient vantals of the entrance door or the geminated windows, makes it a rare testimony of medieval hospitals in Occitanie. The city, a member of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, highlights this heritage in a preserved tourist and historical setting.
