Origin and history

The hospital of Sarlat-la-Canéda, built in the middle of the eighteenth century, is a realization initiated by the Countess of Chapt of Rastignac, who entered into religion. The building adopts a classic style, marked by a long straight construction. Its architecture is singularized by a monumental stone staircase, equipped with a wrought ironwork ramp, leading to a paved corridor on both levels. This project reflects the charitable commitment of its sponsor, while embodying the aesthetic cannons of the time.

The entrance gate, dating from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, precedes the main construction. It consists of flat pillars topped with cornices and volutes, crowned with curved pots. These elements, prior to the hospital itself, demonstrate a stylistic transition between the Baroque and classical periods. The gate, as well as facades, roofs and stairways, were classified as Historic Monument by decree in 1946 and 1961, highlighting their heritage value.

Today, the former hospital belongs to an association and retains traces of its past use, although its access and current functions (visits, rental, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources. Its historic address, 30 rue Gambetta, and its Insee code (24520) clearly place it in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as satisfactory (level 6/10).
