Origin and history

The Hospital of the Holy Spirit of Dole, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a building built in the sixteenth century. This historic monument, whose facades, roof, stairwell tower and some interior elements are protected, bears witness to Renaissance hospital architecture. Its inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1991 highlights its heritage importance, especially for its rose adorning the old chapel and its columns on the ground floor.

The location of the hospital at the 4 Allée du Pont Roman in Dole is attested by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rental, accommodation), its state of conservation is considered satisfactory a priori (note 7/10). This type of establishment, in modern times, played a central role in welcoming the poor, the sick and the pilgrims, reflecting the charitable and religious values of society.

The elements protected by the 1991 Decree include remarkable architectural details, such as the panelling of a room on the ground floor or the wall separating the old chapel from the hospital building. These characteristics illustrate the evolution of medical and social practices in Franche-Comté, a region marked by its Burgundy history and medieval heritage. No information is available on any sponsors or individuals related to its foundation.
