Origin and history

The hospital-hospice of Bâgé-le-Châtel found its origins around 1250, when a first hospital was founded, although no trace of it remains today. The present building, built in 1698, was confirmed by a royal ordinance and placed under the direction of nuns. This monument reflects the organization of the care and reception of the sick at a time when hospital facilities were often run by religious communities.

During the 19th century, the hospital gradually lost its importance due to advances in modern medicine. He then turned into a hospice, adapting his vocation to the changing needs of the local population. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1980, recognizing its heritage value. The protected elements include facades, roofs, the chapel with its decor, as well as historic rooms and rooms.

Located in the department of Ain, in Bâgé-le-Châtel, this hospital-hospice illustrates the social and medical history of the region. Its architecture and spatial organization, with rooms dedicated to the sick and a chapel, bear witness to the care practices and Christian charity that dominated the era of modern medicine. Today, there remains a significant example of the French hospital heritage, marked by centuries of evolution in the care of the most vulnerable.
