Origin and history
The hospital Saint-Cyr de Villeneuve-sur-Lot was built in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century thanks to the generosity of Pierre Nicolas Saint-Cyr de Coquard, a local benefactor. The plans, drawn between 1833 and 1834 by the departmental architect Gustave Bourrières, are inspired by the neo-classical style. The U-shaped building with a central chapel topped by a slate dome was completed in 1840. His house as director, added around 1845, completes the whole. Published in 1844 as an architectural model, it marks the urbanization of the neighborhood and serves as a stylistic reference for the city.
The chapel and apothecary, preserved only in their original state, illustrate the 19th century hospital heritage. The chapel keeps its furniture and murals of the period, while the apothecary, inspired by the Empire style, still exhibits its layout and its pharmacy pots (now at the Museum of Gajac). The hospital, initially run by nuns in the north wing, extends from the 19th and 20th centuries east and northeast. It is listed in the Historical Monuments on December 20, 2005 for its facades, roofs, courtyard, gate, chapel and apothecary.
The old hospital, replaced by a new centre (Fumel Road), remains a testimony of 19th-century hospital architecture in Lot-et-Garonne. Its U-shaped plan, open galleries and stone-cut porch reflect the health and aesthetic standards of the era. The building, a public property, also symbolizes the local philanthropic commitment, with a patron and a departmental architect as key actors. Its urban influence and its social role (reception of the sick, management by sisters) make it an emblematic monument of Villeneuve-sur-Lot.
