Origin and history

The St John's Hospital of Sens occupies the site of the former St John's Abbey, founded in the 5th or 6th century by the archbishop Saint Heracle under the Merovingians. This monastery, originally in ruins in the 12th century, was restored to accommodate a community of regular canons of St Augustine. The Gothic abbey, built in the 13th century, today retains only its choir and some nave spans, the rest having been rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. The ensemble was sold as a national good in 1792 and transformed into a hospital, with major extensions in the 20th century.

The church, classified as a historical monument since 1862, is distinguished by its exceptionally bright medieval choir, its high Gothic bays and an ionic 17th century facade decorated with a flamboyant pink. The 18th-century U-conventual buildings house a cloister with broken roofs and stone dorms. The site, formerly outside the walls of Sens on the commercial axis towards Troyes, played a key role in the exchanges related to the Champagne fairs.

In the 21st century, the Saint John Chapel, closed to the public and at risk, was the subject of a citizen mobilization led by the association Sens Patrimoine. In 2024, she was selected for the Heritage Lotto thanks to the intervention of student Mkrtitch Martirossyan, who alerted Stéphane Bern about his critical state. In January 2025, the association appealed to the Dijon Administrative Court to compel the Sens Hospital Centre to undertake emergency work, accusing a prolonged inaction having aggravated its deterioration.

Historical sources point to the economic and religious importance of the abbey, linked to farms (as in Lixy) and a priory in Chaumont. The old plans, perhaps preserved at the National Library, reflect its architectural evolution, marked by fires (as in 1416) and reconstructions. Today, the site combines medieval, classical and hospitable heritage, illustrating almost 15 centuries of history.

Access to the church is now via a side door of the north walkway, with the original gates blocked. The facade, with its triangular pediment and lateral portals surmounted by dsoculus, reflects the transformations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Despite its ranking, the chapel remains threatened by the disrepair, symbolizing the challenges of preserving the hospital heritage in France.
