Origin and history
The Saint Joseph Hospital in Compiègne is a neoclassical historical monument designed around 1842 by architect Moïse Weil. Originally, he housed a teaching house founded by the Sisters of the Saint Joseph Congregation of Cluny. This building illustrates 19th century religious and educational architecture, with particular attention to the chapel, a central element of the building.
The convent chapel, completed at the same time, is distinguished by its flat bedside adorned with a monumental painting in triptych. Directed by the painter Amédée Dupuy Delaroche, this classic work is accompanied by his design and iconography. It reflects the importance of sacred art in religious establishments of the time, mixing spiritual function and aesthetic ambition.
The St. Joseph's Hospital has been the subject of successive heritage protections: the entrance pavilion, the facade of the chapel, as well as the covers and facades on street and courtyard, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 5 September 1946. More recently, the entire chapel was inscribed on February 5, 2014, highlighting its architectural and artistic value.
Today, the building belongs to a communal public institution. Its history reflects the evolution of religious buildings in the 19th century, from teaching to health, while maintaining a remarkable artistic and architectural heritage. The location in Compiègne, Oise, makes it a witness to the local and regional history of the Hauts-de-France.
