Facades and roofs of the buildings surrounding the first courtyard (AH 15): inscription by order of 14 January 1977
Origin and history
The Fontainebleau Hospital is a building built during the second half of the 17th century, located in the city of the same name, in Seine-et-Marne. This monument is now partially protected, with its facades and roofs surrounding the first courtyard, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 14 January 1977. This is an example of the old regime's hospital architecture, typical of the institutions intended to accommodate the sick and the poor under the authority of local or religious communities.
Over the centuries, the hospital has evolved to become part of the Centre hospitalier du Sud Seine-et-Marne, created in January 2017 by the merger of three institutions, including Fontainebleau. Although the historic building is no longer the heart of modern medical activity, its architectural heritage bears witness to its past role in health and social care. Today, there remains an urban landmark, located at the 3rd street of Dr Clément-Matry, and belongs to the municipality.
The location of the hospital, noted as fair (level 5/10) in the heritage databases, reflects the precision challenges for ancient monuments. His inscription in the title of Historic Monuments, however, underlines his importance in the local heritage, linked to the history of public health in Île-de-France. No information is available on its current accessibility to the public or on any visits.
