Origin and history
L'hospice de Malrigou de Saint-Jean-d'Estissac is a monument located in the commune of Saint-Jean-d'Estissac, New Aquitaine. Its origins date back to the first half of the 15th century, during which time it was probably founded to welcome travellers, the poor or the sick, according to the practices of medieval hospices. These institutions then played a central role in rural communities, providing shelter and care in a context where medical facilities were scarce and often linked to the Church or local initiatives.
The second significant period of this building corresponds to the third quarter of the twentieth century, suggesting renovation or adaptation to modern needs. At that time, hospices often moved towards more specialized functions, such as nursing homes or nursing centres, reflecting the transformations of social and medical policies in France. Although internal sources do not specify the details of these changes, they demonstrate the sustainability of this site in the local landscape and its adaptation to successive periods.
