Door of the hospice from the priory of Puyberland: classification by decree of 26 January 1913
Origin and history
The Melle Hospice, located in the Deux-Sèvres department in New Aquitaine, is marked by a monumental gate classified as Historic Monuments since 1913. This door, originally from the Puybelland Priory (or Puyberland), was probably the main entrance to the latter. It takes the form of a truncated triumphal arch at its base, an architectural style typical of the modern period, reflecting the influence of 17th century religious and civic constructions.
The Puybelland Priory, from which this door came, illustrates the importance of religious establishments in the region at that time. Priories often served as spiritual, economic and social centres for local communities. The reuse of this door in Melle's hospice suggests a desire to preserve a significant heritage element, while assigning it a new function within a building dedicated to hospitality and care.
Classified by ministerial decree on 26 January 1913, this door is now owned by the municipality of Melle. Its state of conservation and its current location, Place de Strasbourg, make it a point of historical interest for visitors. The available data indicate an approximate location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", without further details on its accessibility or contemporary use (visits, rentals, etc.).
