Origin and history

The former Gaujot military hospital, located at 2 rue de l'Hôpital-Militaire in the Strasbourg district of Krutenau, was built at the end of the seventeenth century. He was named Gustave Gaujot (1828–1913), the institution's chief physician, and embodied the city's medical and military heritage. Its facades and roofs, including those of the entrance pavilion and the Horloge Pavilion, were listed as historic monuments in 1929, reflecting their architectural and heritage value.

The hospital operated until 1946, when its activities were transferred to the new Lyautey military hospital in the Neuhof district. Since 1945, the buildings have been home to an administrative city, marking a civil conversion of this historic site. Military engineer Sébastien The Prestre de Vauban is associated with its design, stressing its strategic importance in the Strasbourg urban planning of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Historical sources, such as the work by Fernand Schierer L-Hôpital militaire Gaujot (1691–1939), document its evolution from its foundation to its transformation. Today, the site remains a symbol of Alsatian heritage, combining medical memory, classical architecture and contemporary administrative function.
