Origin and history

The Saint-Antoine hospital originated in Saint-Antoine Abbey, declared a national property by decree of 11 February 1791. Under the Convention, the site becomes the Eastern Hospice to meet the medical needs of Eastern Paris and to honour the revolutionary commitment of the inhabitants of the neighborhood. The church was destroyed in 1796, and architect Clavareau built two wings, despite limited means. In 1802, the establishment took the name of St.Antoine Hospital, with only 144 beds and a reduced medical team.

From 1811 to 1881, the Hospitallers of Sainte-Marthe de Beaune modernized the hospital, improving hygiene and increasing its capacity to 320 beds in 1842. A legacy of Emmanuel Moiana in 1872 allows the creation of an annex of 500 beds. At the end of the 19th century, figures such as Georges Hayem or Antoine Béclère made the hospital a medical centre of excellence. During World War I, he was bombarded in 1918.

Partly listed as historical monuments in 1962 for its facades and its central staircase, the hospital innovated again in 1965 with the invention of the nutripomphe by Étienne Lévy and Jean Loygue. Professor Georges Offenstadt leads the resuscitation from 1997 to 2010. Today, with 780 beds and a specialization in rare diseases, he remains a major player in research, as during the Covid-19 pandemic with the work of Karine Lacombe.

The hospital has also been home to the AP-HP headquarters since 2022 and a nursing training institute (IFSI). Its history reflects medical and social developments, from revolutionary hospices to contemporary challenges, while preserving a remarkable architectural heritage.
